Gutter Hanger Spacing in Florida: Why 24 Inches Beats 36

A gutter is a long trough that holds water, and water is heavy. A full section can weigh many pounds per foot. Hangers carry that load to the fascia. If they are too far apart, the gutter bows between them, holds standing water, and pulls fasteners out.

Common types include:

Hidden hangers with screws are the standard for modern seamless installs. Spike and ferrule systems are the ones that tend to pull out.

• Hidden hangers, which clip inside the gutter and screw into the fascia. They hold well and look clean.
• Spike and ferrule, an older method where a long nail passes through the gutter. These loosen over time.
• Strap hangers, visible brackets used with half-round gutters.
• Bracket hangers, used on tile roofs and some special cases

Three local conditions put more load on hangers:

Closer spacing and solid fastening reduce the chance of failure.

• Heavy rain. Intense summer storms fill gutters quickly.
• Debris. Oak, pine, and palm material adds weight and can block flow.
• Wind. Tropical systems and thunderstorms produce gusts that tug at gutters.

If the estimate does not say, ask. A quote that saves money by spacing hangers at 36 inches or more is not the same product.

• What type of hanger do you use?
• How far apart do you space them?
• What are the screws made of, and how long are they?
• Will you check the fascia first?

If your gutters sag because of standing water from a bad pitch, or because the fascia is soft, more hangers alone will not solve it. Correct the cause. You can often see hanger problems without climbing. Stand back from the house and look along each gutter line:

Photograph any problem spots so you can point them out to an installer.

• A straight line means the gutter is well supported.
• A wavy or scalloped line means it is bowing between hangers.
• Gaps between the gutter and fascia show hangers that have loosened.
• Visible nail heads mean spike-and-ferrule hangers, which tend to pull out.

If your gutters are sound and only lack support, adding hidden hangers between the existing ones is a modest repair. The installer screws new hangers into solid fascia and checks pitch.
