12 Questions to Ask a Gutter Installer Before You Hire Anyone in Orlando

Materials decide how long the system lasts, and they are where low quotes save money.

• What gauge is the aluminum? .032-inch resists dents and sagging better than .027-inch. Both are used, and the quote should name which one.
• Is the gutter formed on site? True seamless gutter is formed from a coil at your house and cut to length. Pre-cut sections joined together are sectional gutter, not seamless.
• What size are the gutters and downspouts? Five-inch gutters with 2x3 downspouts are the default. Many Central Florida roofs do better with six-inch gutters and 3x4 downspouts.
• What color and finish? Baked-on factory finish holds up in Florida sun. Ask whether your HOA has color rules.

Installation quality is where most failures start. These questions expose it.

• How far apart are the hangers? Hidden hangers every 24 inches or closer hold a run up under a full load of rain. Wider spacing is where sagging starts.
• How do you set the pitch? About a quarter inch per ten feet toward the downspout is the standard. A crew that cannot explain pitch has not thought about it.
• What sealant do you use at corners and end caps? Corners are the one place a seamless system can leak, so the answer matters.
• Will you check the fascia before hanging anything? Rotted fascia cannot hold hangers. A good installer probes it and tells you what they find.

• How many downspouts, and where do they empty? A common rule of thumb is one per 30 to 40 feet of gutter. Each outlet should land several feet from the foundation.
• What happens at valleys and long runs? Valleys concentrate flow and cause overflows. Ask about splash guards or extra outlets.

• Which license does this work run under, and can I verify it? Look it up in the Florida DBPR license search.
• Can you send a certificate of liability insurance from your insurer? It should come directly from the insurer or agent.
• Do you carry workers' compensation, and are your crew employees or subcontractors? Verify coverage through the Division of Workers' Compensation.

Ask what the warranty covers, how long it lasts, and who honors it. A workmanship warranty of five years on an install is common, and repairs usually carry a shorter term. It should cover leaking seams and sections pulling away from application error, and it should say plainly what it does not cover, such as storm damage and blockage from debris.

Good answers are specific: ".032, hangers every 24 inches, six downspouts, all outlets extended five feet." Weak answers are vague: "We use quality materials" or "That's what everyone does." An installer who tells you what they would not do, such as skip fascia repair or use wide hanger spacing, is usually the one to hire.

Do not hire anyone who will not put answers in writing. And do not hire for a gutter replacement if your gutters are sound and just need cleaning. A good installer tells you so.

An installer who has worked on your kind of house answers these without hesitating. One who has not tends to speak in generalities.

• Tile roof: How will the gutter attach, and will anyone walk on the tile? Who pays if a tile cracks? Have you done tile jobs in this neighborhood?
• Two stories: Do you use ladders or a lift for the second floor? How are downspouts strapped over long drops?
• Hip roof with many corners: How many inside and outside corners are there, and are they priced each? What sealant do you use on them?
• Valleys: Where two roof planes meet, how will you keep water from overshooting the gutter?
• Existing gutters: Will you remove and haul away the old system? Is that in the price?
• Fascia: What happens if you find rot after the old gutters come off, and what does a replacement board cost per foot?

The best sign at an estimate visit is the questions you get back. A careful installer will ask:

Each question tells you they are thinking about the whole system, not just selling linear feet. If nobody asks about drainage, the outlets probably were not thought through.

• Where does water pool or splash during a heavy rain?
• Do you have trees over the roof, and what kind?
• Does your HOA have rules about gutter color or style?
• Are there plans to replace the roof soon?
• Do you have a sprinkler system or landscape lighting near the house?

Write the answers down at the visit, or ask the installer to put them in the estimate. A simple table works: one column per installer, one row per question. When you compare later, you will see which answers were specific and which were vague.
