How Often Should You Clean Gutters in Florida? A Schedule by Tree Type

• Fall: laurel oaks, sweetgums, and other deciduous trees drop leaves

Adjust for what surrounds your house:

Your gutters will tell you if the schedule is wrong. Overflow, sagging, or plants growing in the trough means you waited too long.

• No trees nearby: once or twice a year, mainly to remove shingle grit and dust
• Live oaks or laurel oaks: twice a year, late spring and early fall, and a third visit after heavy leaf drop
• Pines: three to four times a year, since needles pack quickly and mat on guards
• Mixed cover or several trees: four times a year, quarterly

Look for:

• Water spilling over the edge in a normal rain
• Dark stains or streaks below the gutter
• Plants, moss, or weeds growing in the trough
• Sagging sections
• Birds or insects nesting in packed debris
• Downspouts that dribble or do not flow
