Gutter Replacement Cost in Florida: When New Gutters Beat Another Repair

A useful test: if more than about a third of the run needs work, replacement usually costs less than the repairs. Repairs on old sectional gutters also tend to move the leak to the next seam.

• Repair: leaking end cap, one loose section, one clogged downspout, a small hole. See gutter leak repair.

A good replacement estimate itemizes the work so you can see where the money goes:

• Tear-off and haul-away of old gutters and downspouts
• Any fascia repair, priced per board
• New seamless runs, with gauge and size stated
• Hidden hangers and their spacing
• Downspouts, sized and counted
• Outlet locations and extensions

Three local factors shorten gutter life:

• Heavy summer rain. Roughly 50 inches a year, much of it in short, intense storms, means gutters run full often.
• Debris. Live oaks, laurel oaks, and pines drop material most of the year. Packed gutters hold water, and wet weight pulls hangers out.
• Humidity. Constant moisture rots fascia from the top down, especially behind gutters that have overflowed for years.

Replacement is the moment to fix what caused the failure. If the old gutters were too small, upsize. If there were too few downspouts, add them. If outlets dumped beside the foundation, move them.

If your gutters are sound and just full of debris, a cleaning is the honest answer. If a single run is bent from a fallen limb, replace that run only. Partial replacement is possible, though matching color and profile takes care.

Replacement is also the wrong first move if your fascia is rotted along the whole roofline. Fix the wood first, or the new gutters pull away the same way the old ones did.

Removal is easy to overlook and easy to leave out of a quote. Old gutters come off in long sections, hangers and spikes have to be pulled out of the fascia, and the metal and debris have to be hauled away. On a whole house, that is a few hours of labor plus disposal.

Some low quotes skip it and leave you with a pile in the yard. Ask for tear-off and haul-away as a line item so it is priced, not assumed.

The wood behind a failing gutter is often in worse shape than the gutter. Years of overflow soak the fascia board, and the rot starts at the top edge where the gutter hangs. On some Central Florida homes, moisture also reaches the soffit underneath.

A responsible installer probes the fascia before quoting and tells you what they find. If rot turns up mid-job, the estimate should say what a replacement board costs per foot. Replacement usually takes one to two days. Installs typically carry a five-year workmanship warranty, and repairs a shorter term, so compare terms in writing. The warranty should cover leaks at seams and sections pulling away from application error, and it should say plainly that it does not cover storm damage or debris blockage.

If your fascia is soft and your roof is due for replacement soon, coordinate the two jobs so the roofer does not have to remove the new gutters. These examples illustrate the range of $1,100 to $3,800 and are not quotes.

• A 1980s single-story home, 160 feet, sectional gutters removed and replaced with seamless aluminum, sound fascia: in the lower part of the range.
• A 1990s two-story home, 220 feet, tear-off, 40 feet of fascia replaced, six downspouts: in the middle.
• A large older home, 300 feet, rotted fascia along much of the roofline, six-inch gutters: toward the top, with fascia making up a significant share.

Ask how long the job will take and how long the old gutters will be off the house. A well-run replacement removes and hangs section by section, so the roof is never without drainage for long. Ask what the plan is for weather, and whether the crew will tarp or secure any areas left open overnight.
