Where to Put Downspouts: Placement That Works for Orlando Yards

Start with these rules of thumb:

Large roof planes and heavy rain push the count up. See how many downspouts a house needs.

• A downspout at each end of a long run so water has a short path
• About one per 30 to 40 feet of gutter as a starting point
• One at every valley or roof-to-roof junction, where flow concentrates
• Corners are usually the best locations, since they tuck out of sight
• Avoid entries and walkways unless the water is piped away

Before you place the outlet, decide where the water goes. Options include:

On flat Orlando lots, the destination often matters more than the downspout itself.

• A lawn or planting area that slopes away from the house
• A swale or drainage path that leads to the street or a retention area
• A buried drain that carries water to a pop-up emitter or discharge point
• A rain barrel for garden use, with overflow

Do not discharge onto a neighbor's lot, and check for utility easements and HOA rules. On small lots in communities like Ocoee and Kissimmee, the discharge path may run to the street side or a swale. Ask your installer to show you the plan.

• Discharging near the slab edge, where soil erodes
• Emptying onto a walkway, where it leaves slippery algae and standing water
• Placing a downspout in a spot where a mower or vehicle will crush it
• Sending water to a low spot that collects and stays wet
• Too few outlets on a long run

If your downspouts drain well and the ground stays dry, leave them. Do not add extensions that create trip hazards or send water to a worse spot. A professional look is worth it before spending. Different lots call for different plans.

• Small lot, close neighbors (Ocoee, Kissimmee): send water to the front or back where it can reach a swale or the street, not the side yard shared with a neighbor.
• Waterfront or lakefront lot (Winter Park, Windermere): keep discharge away from the slab and the shoreline, and check rules near water.
• Sloped lot (Clermont): spread flow on the uphill side and pipe water on the downhill side to a stable outlet.
• Corner lot with a wide front yard: use the yard for discharge, with extensions to carry water toward the street.
• Pool deck or screened lanai: keep downspouts away from the pool area and screen enclosures, and send water to the yard.

Walk the house and mark each roof edge and valley. Note where gutters end. Decide where each downspout can go while staying out of the way of doors, windows, and hose bibs.
