Downspout Replacement Cost in Florida: Prices for Common Jobs

• Replace one damaged section: near the low end of $75 to $450.
• Replace a full second-story run: the upper end.
• Add one downspout to a long gutter run: the low end of $120 to $800.
• Add several and upsize to 3x4: the upper end.
• Add an extension or splash block: $75 to $450 across a whole house.

• Height. Second-story downspouts need longer runs and more brackets.
• Size. A 3x4 downspout has twice the opening area of a 2x3, and it costs more.
• Elbows and offsets. Each bend adds parts and slows flow.
• Material and color. Aluminum in a stock color is the baseline. Copper is a different budget.
• Outlet work. Cutting a new outlet in the gutter and sealing it adds labor.

Look for crushed or dented sections, sections that have pulled away from the wall, water leaking at a joint, or a clog that keeps returning at the same elbow. A repeat clog usually means a tight bend or an undersized downspout, and the fix is a reroute, not another cleaning.

A common rule of thumb is one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, with more where a large roof plane sends water into one run. Central Florida storms drop a lot of rain quickly, so undersizing shows up fast. Our post on how many downspouts a house needs explains the sizing.

Do not replace a downspout that is only clogged. Flush it from the top with a hose, and from the bottom if that fails. Do not add downspouts if your gutters are overflowing because they are packed with debris. Downspouts fail for reasons you can see from the ground. Ladders and mowers dent them. Wind and settling pull straps loose. Debris packs the elbows, and heat and sun make old plastic extensions brittle. In Central Florida's wet season, a partly blocked downspout is often the first thing to overflow.

Corrosion is less common than in a wet cold climate, since aluminum does not rust, but steel downspouts on older homes do. If you have galvanized steel, expect rust at the seams and the base.

If you are replacing one section, match the size, shape, and color of the rest. A 2x3 downspout will not connect cleanly to a 3x4 outlet without an adapter.

• Aluminum is the standard. It does not rust, and stock colors match most trim.
• Copper looks exceptional and costs several times more. It must not touch aluminum or galvanized steel.
• Vinyl is cheap, though it can crack and warp in Florida sun.
• Galvanized steel shows up on older homes and rusts at the seams.

Replacing a downspout is a good moment to fix where it empties. A downspout that ends beside the slab soaks the soil right next to your foundation.
